With her loud clothes, jangling jewelry, nasal voice, and magnificent lack of tact, Minnie initially seems like comic relief. Gordon makes her funny enough that it’s easy to overlook just how sinister she actually is. As Rosemary’s pregnancy becomes increasingly disturbing, Minnie’s constant hovering begins to look considerably less neighborly. Gordon’s performance is one of the great supporting turns in horror. She transforms a seemingly ridiculous New York busybody into something genuinely unnerving without ever losing the humor that makes Minnie so memorable. The performance earned Gordon the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with a Golden Globe. More than fifty years later, Minnie has become a cult character in her own right.
