Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasse

The Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis) is a beautifully colored saltwater fish known for its elongated fins, vivid red and orange body tones, contrasting blue highlights, and elegant swimming behavior. Mature males are particularly striking, displaying extended pelvic fins and enhanced coloration that make this small fairy wrasse an eye-catching addition to a well-planned marine aquarium. Native primarily to the Red Sea and nearby waters of Oman, this species inhabits coral and rubble reef environments where it forms loose aggregations and feeds on zooplankton above the reef. Its modest adult size, active personality, and coral-safe behavior make it especially appealing for established reef aquariums, although it is equally suitable for peaceful fish-only aquarium communities. Like other members of the genus Cirrhilabrus, the Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasse spends much of the day swimming in the water column and retreating into rockwork when threatened or when resting. It is generally peaceful but may display territorial behavior toward similar fairy wrasses, particularly between males. Quick Care Guide Care Level: Easy to Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons Temperament: Peaceful Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore Reef Safe: Yes Region: Western Indian Ocean – Red Sea and Oman Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis Tank Requirements Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with a combination of open swimming space and substantial rockwork. Caves, crevices, and overhangs give the wrasse secure places to retreat when startled and provide important nighttime shelter. A sand bed is not required because fairy wrasses typically sleep within the rockwork rather than burying themselves. Moderate, varied water movement is appropriate, particularly when balanced with calmer areas around the reef structure. A securely fitted mesh screen or aquarium lid is essential. Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasses are capable jumpers and may launch from the aquarium when startled, chased, or introduced into unfamiliar surroundings. Carefully cover openings around plumbing, cables, and filtration equipment. Diet and Feeding In nature, Cirrhilabrus rubriventralis feeds primarily on zooplankton captured from the water column. Aquarium specimens should receive a varied diet of small, protein-rich marine foods. Offer enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen reef blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets or flakes. Rotating several foods helps provide balanced nutrition while supporting strong coloration and body condition. Because this is an active planktivorous fish, two or more small feedings per day are beneficial when practical. Newly introduced specimens may respond particularly well to frozen foods and small crustacean-based offerings while becoming accustomed to prepared diets. Temperament and Tankmates The Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful and works well with a broad range of similarly peaceful community fish. Suitable companions include gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, smaller tangs, peaceful angelfish, and other non-predatory marine species. Some displaying, chasing, or territorial behavior can occur around other fairy and flasher wrasses, particularly between males or fish with similar coloration and body shape. Introductions should be planned carefully when maintaining multiple wrasses. A single specimen is an excellent choice for most aquariums. In larger systems, experienced aquarists may maintain compatible fairy wrasses together when ample swimming space, hiding areas, and appropriate introduction techniques are provided. Reef Compatibility The Ruby Longfin Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe and does not normally damage or consume corals, clams, or other sessile reef organisms. Its small adult size and plankton-feeding behavior make it particularly well suited to coral-focused reef aquariums. It is also generally compatible with ornamental shrimp, snails, and other common cleanup-crew invertebrates, although exceptionally tiny crustaceans may be investigated as potential food. Water Parameters Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Maintain stable, well-oxygenated water with consistently good water quality. Stability is more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within the recommended ranges, and sudden changes in temperature or salinity should be avoided. Common Considerations Jumping risk: A tight-fitting mesh screen or secure aquarium lid is essential. Small adult size: Reaches approximately 3 inches but remains an active swimmer that benefits from ample horizontal swimming room. Wrasse interactions: Males may display or become territorial toward similar fairy and flasher wrasses. Regular feeding: Benefits from multiple small meals of nutritious plankton-sized and meaty marine foods. Initial acclimation: Newly introduced specimens may hide within rockwork before becoming comfortable enough to spend more time swimming openly.
