Additional Rollers

Our Additional Rollers are purchased by customers that either want to add more length or replace parts on their original Line Guard or Pole Guard kit.  Additional Rollers are also purchased when a customer has other applications where they want a spinning roller on a line (such as a guy wire). Some fiber optic lines are especially prone to getting chewed by squirrels and the additional rollers provide a simple, and effective cover over the cable bundle to prevent future chewing.  In rare cases, rollers might have been damaged during initial installation, so a backup set is useful in that case. Without the correct number of rollers (at least 5 rollers for a Line Guard application), some animals can jump the system (original length is 5 feet), which could potentially result in an animal-caused power outage. If you would like to have a lengthened segment of protection via additional rollers or a backup to ensure continuous protection of your overhead lines year-round, Critter Guard can help through our Additional Rollers. Critter Guard encourages you to be creative with the additional rollers; numerous other customers have found the Pole Guard can be uniquely adapted for many other uses, like limiting access to the bird feeder line. In relation to the Pole Guard, the rollers must spin freely to be effective. The rollers will protect the Pole Guard so that squirrels and other rodents are not able to get to the other side of the pole. The Additional Rollers package includes 10 roller halves, which form 5 complete rollers. Each roller is 12 inches in length, which results in a 5-foot long assembly once installed. Content Written by John Sims Installation Additional Rollers Installation For overhead power line and power pole applications, Critter Guard recommends this product be installed by qualified power line technicians. This is not absolutely required, but is good practice. It is not required to de-power the line. Assure the conductor is properly insulated and not showing signs of wear or degradation. For Substation applications, position one end of the Line Guard approximately 5 feet outside the vertical perimeter of the substation fence. For other installations, position one end of the Line Guard approximately 2 feet from the power pole or vertical structure (i.e., building). DO NOT TOUCH LIVE TERMINALS or CONDUCTORS. Wear appropriate safety gloves. For power pole applications, assure the pole is in good condition. Position the Pole Guard assembly approximately 8 - 12 feet above ground level, or above the lowest point where a “critter” could jump onto the pole. Assure location and height of installation is clear of any objects a critter could use to swing from or grab (i.e., conduits, anchors, spikes). Installation defects are specifically not covered under the company warranty and are the responsibility of the installer. The company’s liability for any damaged or defective product is limited to the value of the product sale only. No consequential or incidental claims will be accepted, including claims of improper installation or damage caused by improper installation. If in doubt, contact a qualified power line technician.
