Quick Facts: ABV: 13%  |  Origin: Central Coast, California  |  Style: Dry Sauvignon Blanc  |  Producer: Robert Mondavi Winery Production & Heritage Robert Mondavi Winery, founded in 1966 in Oakville, Napa Valley, reshaped the American wine landscape by championing varietal labeling and modern winemaking techniques. The Private Selection line draws fruit from California's Central Coast, where vineyards sit between the Pacific Ocean and coastal mountain ranges. That maritime influence keeps temperatures moderate, preserving the natural acidity and aromatic intensity that define this Sauvignon Blanc. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks retains the grape's bright, herbaceous character without oak influence. Tasting Notes Aroma: Fresh lime and green apple lead the nose, followed by green grass, grapefruit zest, and lemon rind. A subtle hint of tropical fruit and gooseberry emerges as the wine opens in the glass. Taste: The entry is crisp and citrus-driven, with Meyer lemon and honeysuckle flavors at the fore. Mid-palate, notes of melon and grass develop alongside a steely mineral backbone. Bright, lively acidity keeps every sip focused and clean. Finish: The finish is medium in length with a spicy, clean quality that lingers alongside traces of green bell pepper and lemon rind. It closes dry with refreshing mineral tension. How to Drink Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc Serve well chilled, between 45–50°F, to preserve its aromatic intensity and crisp acidity. This is a wine built for drinking young and fresh rather than aging. A classic Spritzer with a splash of soda water highlights its citrus notes on warm afternoons. It works naturally in a Hugo Cocktail, where elderflower syrup and mint complement the wine's herbaceous side. For a brunch option, try it in a White Wine Sangria with sliced green apple, lime, and fresh basil — the wine's fruit-forward brightness anchors the drink. Best For Weeknight dinners with light seafood or salads Outdoor warm-weather gatherings and patio entertaining Introducing new wine drinkers to Sauvignon Blanc's signature style Building a casual wine-and-cheese spread with friends Frequently Asked Questions What does Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc taste like? It delivers a bright, citrus-driven profile featuring Meyer lemon, green apple, and honeysuckle flavors, supported by grassy notes and a crisp mineral finish. How does Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc compare to Woodbridge Sauvignon Blanc? Both are Robert Mondavi labels, but Private Selection sources fruit from the Central Coast's cooler vineyards, resulting in more pronounced acidity and aromatic complexity than the broader-appellation Woodbridge bottling, which tends toward softer, simpler fruit character. Is Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc good for beginners? Yes — its clean acidity, approachable fruit flavors, and absence of oak make it an excellent starting point for anyone exploring the Sauvignon Blanc grape. Where is Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc made? The wine is produced by Robert Mondavi Winery using grapes grown on California's Central Coast, a region where Pacific Ocean fog and coastal breezes create ideal conditions for aromatic white varieties. Goat cheese salad with citrus vinaigrette complements its bright acidity. Seared halibut with lemon-caper sauce echoes the citrus notes. Vietnamese summer rolls benefit from the wine's refreshing minerality. Light pasta dishes with pesto connect naturally to the grassy, green character. What sizes does Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc come in? It is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle. Is Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc worth the price? It positions as an affordable, everyday California Sauvignon Blanc that consistently delivers clean varietal character, making it a reliable value within the entry-level tier of the category. Why Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc? What separates this bottling from the crowded field of California Sauvignon Blancs is its specific Central Coast sourcing. The cool-climate fruit retains a level of acidity and herbaceous complexity often lost in warmer inland regions, and the stainless steel fermentation preserves those qualities without masking them. Robert Mondavi's legacy in varietal-driven California winemaking lends credibility to even the brand's most accessible tiers. For an everyday white that expresses genuine Sauvignon Blanc character rather than generic tropical sweetness, this remains a dependable choice.
