Finished bit reins, are made out of harness leather and are 7’ long and ⅝” wide and are finished with leather tie straps. What makes using split riding reins the ultimate option for safety? Consider this. If you tie your reins together and the mule puts his foot down for a drink of water, if his foot goes over the top of the rein, you can flip over. Likewise, if you ever step on the rein, your foot can get caught and you’ll be hung up. Split reins do not come with the same problems of a single rein. You can cross your reins to simulate the single rein feel, but single reins themselves are dangerous and can cause serious wrecks. Proper Care for Riding Reins To care for your reins, Steve strongly suggests soaking your reins with lexol oil in the beginning overnight. Hang them up, wipe off the extra, and you should be good for the season. Thereafter, occasional light oil is all the additional care you’ll need to provide.
