King of Epiphany- Ridendo Magazine

This charming issue of Ridendo, the French humor magazine created exclusively for physicians, captures the spirit of Epiphany celebrations in mid-1930s Paris. The cover illustration depicts a jovial figure wearing the traditional paper crown from the Galette des Rois, gleefully examining what appears to be medical charts while surrounded by holiday treats. The bold two-color printing in burgundy and gold on pale blue stock exemplifies the economical yet visually striking approach of interwar French periodical publishing. Ridendo, meaning 'laughing' in Latin, served as professional light reading for the French medical community, combining humor and satire with pharmaceutical advertising. This issue features a back cover advertisement for Eucalyptine Le Brun, a pulmonary antiseptic marketed for respiratory conditions from bronchitis to tuberculosis. Such medical advertising provides fascinating insight into pharmaceutical marketing of the era. A distinctive piece of French medical publishing history, this magazine bridges the worlds of professional practice and popular culture, offering a window into how interwar French physicians balanced their serious work with seasonal celebrations and collegial humor.
