RHYTHM KING FROM MARS

Vintage Rhythm Boxes Gone Rogue Designed and built in the US by Maestro in 1965, the Rhythm King drum machine helped establish the iconic sound of rhythm boxes (and electronic based grooves in modern music) long before drum machines would become a studio staple in the early 80s. These preset analog rhythm boxes appeared in the late 1960s and quickly found their way onto classic recordings like Sly & The Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On, mid-70s Kraftwerk albums, as well as countless soul, pop, rock, and experimental records, all the way up to Drake's Hotline Bling.  It took us a few years to track down both machines - the Rhythm King MRK-2 (1971) and MRK-4 (and 1975) - but it was well worth the wait. They sound surprisingly different, but there’s an unmistakable family resemblance - the kind you’d expect from distant cousins.  We sampled every available drum sound from both machines with multiple round robins, captured the original factory rhythms, and then pushed the machines far beyond their intended purpose to uncover entirely new grooves. Ranging from clean and classic to modern, distorted mayhem, the result is a collection of 376 one-shots and 200 loops ranging from authentic, vintage rhythmbox grooves to dirty, driving, saturated rhythms. Organic, Vintage Analog Grooves Both machines share the unmistakable feel that makes vintage rhythm boxes sound so organic - soft, analog transients, quirky timing, and punchy but compact drum grooves with a surprisingly human feel.  The MRK-2 delivers the classic sound most people associate with the Rhythm King name. Softer, warmer, and more understated than its older brother, it encapsulates everything that made these early rhythm boxes sit so well with real instruments, including a pretty loud (charming?) clock noise.  The MRK-4, on the other hand, is a bit brighter, punchier, and more aggressive, offering a sound that feels surprisingly modern while retaining the charm of a vintage preset rhythm box. Together, they create a palette that ranges from understated, vintage accompaniment to driving machine funk, hypnotic krautrock pulses, stripped-down house grooves, and raw proto-industrial rhythms. Discovering Rhythms Hidden Between the Buttons We began our sampling journey by sampling every available drum sound from each unit. Each kick, snare, cymbal, hi-hat, clave, bongo, and percussion sound was recorded individually, with four round robins each to preserve the subtle analog variations that occur from hit to hit. Next we recorded the classic factory patterns - many of the rhythms that helped define recordings from Family Affair through modern hits like Hotline Bling. But we quickly became fascinated by the sounds hiding between the presets. Inspired by artists like Can and Suicide, we started experimenting with partially engaging multiple pattern buttons on the MRK-2. But the most exciting discovery: by pressing buttons down halfway and nudging them at odd angles, we were able to get stripped, almost house-like grooves that the creators had certainly never intended, unlocking inspiring, hidden grooves and carpal tunnel along the way. 😅 Modernizing the Aesthetic Inspired by minimal wave and modern techno and house tracks, we then set out to extensively color both boxes for modern productions. Processing long-form loops through our DBX 165A compressors, Overstayer Saturator, Electro-Harmonix Bi-Filter, and finally capturing everything on tape (even re-pitching the results) proved to be the perfect sauce for turning these humble vintage rhythms into something heavier, stranger, and unmistakably modern. The EHX Bi-Filter did much of the heavy lifting here. By driving its input and carefully shaping the filter frequency, decay, and envelope amount, we transformed the already characterful rhythms into punchy, bouncy, and sometimes downright sinister grooves. Inspired by records like Kraftwerk's Autobahn, the resulting loops feel closer to krautrock, minimal wave, house, and techno than anything we expected when starting this project. From Factory Presets to Happy Accidents The Rhythm King From Mars combines every aspect of these machines in a single collection. You'll find clean and color round robin one-shots, 4x pre-made 16-hit kits, and 200 loops spanning factory rhythm patterns, custom pattern combinations, stripped-down groove variations, and the strange accidental rhythms we uncovered while pushing the machines far beyond what their designers had in mind. The loops range from clean and authentic Rhythm King beats to heavily processed analog variations, including tape-saturated grooves, filtered rhythms, and aggressively driven loops full of movement, grit, and character. Whether you're building custom kits, chopping loops, layering percussion, recreating vintage grooves, or searching for unconventional machine rhythms that don't sound like every other drum machine library, Rhythm King From Mars reveals just how much range can be hidden inside two seemingly simple boxes. Machines With Staying Power While we originally set out to capture the sounds that made the Rhythm King famous, what surprised us most were the sounds that lived beyond its original role. The result is a collection that moves from classic Rhythm King patterns to grooves the original engineers probably never imagined - from soul and pop accompaniment to krautrock pulses, machine funk, and modern techno rhythms. Not because the machines changed, but because musicians keep finding new ways to use them.
