Drought-Tolerant Once Established – Pink Lady Indian Hawthorn is drought-tolerant and requires light regular watering, making it suitable for low-maintenance gardens and pairing well with other drought-tolerant California natives like Ceanothus. Evergreen Foliage Year-Round – Dark leathery leaves emerge reddish-bronze, then mature to glossy dark green for lasting color and structure. Compact 4-6 Foot Size – This fast-growing evergreen shrub typically reaches 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, giving most residential spaces the right scale without overwhelming the garden. Low-Maintenance Growth – Its naturally rounded, dense growth structure makes it suitable for informal borders, privacy screens, and foundation plantings with only light shaping as needed. The plant’s blossoms attract pollinators like butterflies, while its berries provide food for birds. Flowers are followed by clusters of small, dark blue to black berries in the fall that persist into winter, adding another layer of seasonal interest. What Makes It Different Most flowering shrubs either bloom briefly or ask for more water, pruning, or protection than many California gardens can provide. Rhaphiolepis indica Pink Lady provides: Extended Bloom Period – Clusters of pink fragrant flowers bloom from late winter to fall in favorable conditions, giving you more color than many single-season bloomers. Coastal Wind Tolerance – Pink Lady is hardy to USDA Zones 7–10 and can thrive in hot temperatures as well as coastal environments. The Pink Lady is highly resistant to salt spray and is used in coastal gardens. Bronze New Growth – New leaves open reddish-bronze to burgundy bronze before maturing to dark green, giving the shrub a changing color display even when it is not in peak bloom. This variety also has excellent natural resistance to fungal leaf spots, ensuring the foliage remains clean when planted in the right area with good airflow and well drained soil. How It Works Plant in Well-Draining Location Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade or light shade. Rhaphiolepis indica ‘Pink Lady’ thrives in well-draining soil and prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. Better sun exposure typically means denser growth and heavier bloom.
