Ren Hang

Ren Hang, a Beijing photographer who tragically took his own life in 2017 at the age of 29, emerges as an unlikely rebel in the art world. Despite his slight build, shy demeanor, and battles with depression, Ren was a key figure in the Chinese artists' struggle for creative freedom. Like Ai Weiwei, Ren was both controversial in his homeland and celebrated globally. His work, often featuring naked models in unconventional settings, transcends cultural and political boundaries, reflecting a detachment even in extreme imagery. Ren, who self-published 16 monographs and held numerous international exhibitions, saw gender inclusiveness as a crucial aspect of his art. TASCHEN's Ren Hang collection serves as a comprehensive tribute, encompassing his entire career with well-loved classics and previously unseen photos, capturing the essence of Ren's unique vision. The book stands as a poignant celebration of his artistry, bringing solace to those who remember his joy upon seeing it for the first time.
