Brand History: The Legacy of George Remus Remus Bourbon honors the spirit of George Remus, the legendary "King of the Bootleggers" during the Prohibition era. Remus was a Cincinnati lawyer who cleverly found loopholes in the Volstead Act, buying distilleries and selling bourbon for "medicinal purposes." He was renowned for the quality of his whiskey. Today, Ross & Squibb Distillery (formerly MGP Ingredients) continues this legacy, producing award-winning bourbons celebrated for their high-rye character and exceptional quality. The Remus brand, acquired by MGP in 2016, is synonymous with meticulously crafted, aged bourbons that pay tribute to this colorful chapter in American whiskey history. Tasting Notes: Nose: Expect an inviting and complex aroma. The high-rye content from the various mashbills will likely contribute notes of baking spice, black pepper, and potentially floral or herbal undertones. These will be beautifully balanced by traditional bourbon notes of rich caramel, vanilla bean, toasted oak, and hints of dried fruit or dark cherry developed through 8-9 years of aging. Palate: The first sip at 111 proof is sure to be bold and flavorful. Look for a robust rye spice upfront – think cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of mint or dill. This will be interwoven with deep sweetness from the corn, presenting as brown sugar, maple syrup, and dark chocolate. The varying ages and rye percentages in the blend should provide a layered complexity, potentially revealing notes of leather, tobacco, and candied orange peel. Finish: A long, warming, and memorable finish is anticipated. The rye spice will likely persist, accompanied by oak tannins and lingering sweetness. Expect notes of peppery spice, dark cocoa, and a touch of toasted marshmallow or burnt sugar, leaving a sophisticated and satisfying aftertaste.
