Regal Nicky

SPECIES BLACK RHINO ENDANGERED LEVEL CRITICALLY ENDANGERED Nicky, the black rhino, was one of LEWA’s precious orphans and was tended to by three of LEWA’s caregivers. Despite being born blind, Nicky navigated the world with confidence and ease. We feel very lucky to have been able to witness his natural grace; Nicky died in 2016 from an infection. Around 96% of rhinos were lost to poaching between 1970 and 1992. Thanks to conservation efforts, the number of black rhinos in the wild has nearly doubled in the last 13 years.
