Redear Sunfish

The "shellcracker" is a hard-fighting, fast-growing sunfish that keeps your pond balanced and your snail population in check. The redear sunfish is one of the most popular and productive fish for private pond stocking in the South and Southeast. Recognized by the vivid red-orange crescent on the edge of its dark ear flap, the redear is a stunning fish that grows larger than most sunfish species, making it a favorite for anglers and pond managers alike. Its unique ability to crush and consume snails, clams, and other mollusks with its specialized pharyngeal teeth earned it the legendary nickname "shellcracker." Stocking redear sunfish alongside largemouth bass and bluegill creates a well-rounded, self-sustaining pond ecosystem. They occupy a different feeding niche than bluegill, reducing competition while adding diversity, size, and sport to your fishery.
