Red-Yellow Feather Duster

Red and Yellow Feather Dusters (Sabellastarte species) are tube worms commonly found in reef environments where moderate flow delivers a steady supply of plankton. They build soft tubes from sand and debris and remain anchored in place, extending their feather-like crown to feed. When startled, they will quickly retract into their tube for protection. Given stable conditions and adequate feeding, they can remain extended throughout most of the day. Care Requirements Care Level: Easy to Moderate – Requires consistent feeding in lower-nutrient systems Minimum Tank Size: 10+ gallons Aquarium Setup: Established tank with stable parameters and moderate, indirect flow Feather dusters do best in systems where there is enough suspended food in the water column. Placement should allow gentle flow to pass over the crown without folding or collapsing it. Diet & Nutrition Red and Yellow Feather Dusters are filter feeders that rely on fine particulate foods. Diet: Filter Feeder – Consumes suspended micro-particles Recommended Foods: Phytoplankton (live or preserved) Fine zooplankton and microfauna Powdered coral foods and reef blends In nutrient-poor systems, supplemental feeding 2–3 times per week is recommended to maintain health and prevent slow starvation. Lifespan & Growth Rate Lifespan: 1–3+ years Growth Rate: Moderate With regular feeding and stable water conditions, feather dusters can maintain their crown and occasionally regrow it if lost. Temperament & Compatibility Temperament: Peaceful – Completely non-aggressive Reef Safe? Yes They are safe with corals and fish but may be targeted by certain species such as wrasses, butterflyfish, or other invertebrate pickers. Avoid housing them with known predators. Common Challenges & Considerations Crown Shedding: Feather dusters may drop their crown due to stress, shipping, or poor water quality. This is not always fatal, and they can regrow it over time if conditions improve. Starvation Risk: In ultra-clean systems, they may slowly decline without regular feeding. Sensitivity to Flow: Excessive direct flow can cause them to remain closed or detach from their tube. Handling Stress: Rough handling or sudden parameter swings can cause retraction or long-term stress. Water Conditions Temperature: 75–77°F dKH (Alkalinity): 8–9 pH: 8.1–8.3 Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 Stable water conditions and consistent access to suspended nutrients will help maintain a full, extended crown and long-term health.
