Red Spotted Severum

The Red Spotted Severum (Heros efasciatus), a striking South American cichlid, is prized for its vibrant golden hue and and red spots. Native to the rivers and streams of the Amazon basin, this cichlid thrives in well-maintained aquariums with ample swimming space and a variety of hiding spots. Typically reaching up to 8 inches in length, the Red Spotted Severum is an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists seeking a centerpiece fish with a calm yet assertive personality. It gets along well with similar-sized semi-aggressive tank mates. These omnivorous fish enjoy a varied diet, including high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional fresh vegetables. Gold Severums are hardy and adaptable but prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions to mimic their natural habitat. With proper care, they can live for up to 10 years, making them a rewarding addition to any freshwater aquarium. Check out our other South American Cichlids for more compatible tank mates.
