Red Spire Castor Bean

Red Spire Castor Bean (Ricinus communis 'Red Spire')Red Spire Castor Bean is a fast-growing, tropical-looking accent plant that delivers bold foliage and height in a single season. Its deep bronze leaves and red stems create instant contrast and make surrounding plantings look more intentional. Use it when you want quick screening, a dramatic backdrop, or a big vertical statement without waiting years. It performs best with sun, warmth, and steady moisture in well-drained soil. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection grows tall and upright with red stems, large palmate leaves in bronze to bronzy green tones, and showy red, spiny seed pods that add texture as the season progresses. The flowers are small and not the main attraction, but the overall plant reads as architectural and dramatic from a distance. In warm climates it can behave as a tender shrub, while in most regions it is grown as a seasonal annual for reliable summer impact. Mature plants commonly reach about 7 to 10 feet tall and about 2 to 4 feet wide in a single growing season. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for the strongest growth, best color, and thickest stems. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil, and it adapts to many soils as long as drainage is good. Water: Moderate, water regularly to establish and keep evenly moist, especially during hot, dry stretches. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 9 to 11, and commonly grown as an annual elsewhere. Mature Size: About 7 to 10 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a sunny bed where the tall form and bold foliage can anchor the design and read from a distance. Seasonal Screening: Plant in rows for quick seasonal privacy and a dramatic green and bronze wall in summer. Back Border: Place at the back of borders to add height and a tropical look behind flowering perennials. Containers: Grow in very large containers for a patio statement plant, with consistent water and feeding. Bold Contrast Planting: Pair with chartreuse, silver, or bright flowering annuals to heighten color contrast. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep moisture consistent, since repeated drought stress can reduce vigor and leaf quality. Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth, especially in containers, to support faster, fuller size. Staking: Stake in windy sites or rich soils where rapid growth can make tall stems more prone to leaning. Cleanup: Remove damaged leaves as needed and discard plants at season end in frost-prone regions. Safety: Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and keep seeds and plant parts away from children and pets due to toxicity if ingested. Why Choose Red Spire Castor Bean?
