Shumard Red Oak Tree (Quercus shumardii) Known for its stately presence, stunning foliage, and rich history, the Red Oak is a favorite choice among homeowners, landscapers, and nature enthusiasts. Red Oak trees are perfectly grown in hardiness zones 3 through 8. While it doesn’t reach the 80-foot width of its cousin, the Live Oak tree, it is still the perfect shade tree, reaching up to 75 feet tall and 50 feet wide. Once established, Red Oak trees are relatively low maintenance. They are adaptable to different soil types and can withstand various weather conditions, making them a reliable choice for any landscape. Planting Red Oak trees requires a lot of proper planning and preparation, like where to place the tree so that it doesn’t interfere with its surroundings, such as buildings or power lines. Red Oak trees should be planted in the spring before the weather gets too hot. This will allow the roots to settle in their new home without drying out or becoming dehydrated. When you plant your trees, your holes should be twice as big as the root ball. Use the dirt that you removed from the hole to cover the tree’s roots. Red Oaks prefer sandy, well-drained soils, and amending them with too much compost or new soil could compromise them by exposing them to too much moisture.
