Red Headed Bunting

The Red-headed Bunting is a Central Asian, long-distance migratory passerine that breeds in open-country habitats from the Volga–Ural region eastward through Kazakhstan to western Mongolia and northwestern China. It winters primarily on the Indian subcontinent. The species occupies warm, dry lowlands and foothills comprising steppe and irrigated farmland, where scattered shrubs and tall herbaceous growth provide nesting cover within otherwise open terrain. It has recently expanded its breeding range at the northwestern edge of its distribution. The species departs its breeding areas early, often from mid- to late July. Seasonal movements correlate with the drying of steppe vegetation and changes in food availability. During the nonbreeding season, the Red-headed Bunting forms large communal roosts and commutes daily to surrounding feeding areas. Prebreeding migration begins in March, with males returning to the breeding grounds earlier than females. The Red-headed Bunting nests in dense vegetation and relies heavily on invertebrate prey during the breeding season. Outside this period, its diet shifts toward grass and cereal seeds, and birds become gregarious, often foraging in large flocks.
