Fuldaglut Stonecrop

Fuldaglut Stonecrop (Sedum spurium 'Fuldaglut')Fuldaglut Stonecrop is a tough, low groundcover that brings rich foliage color and reliable coverage to sunny spaces with very little upkeep. It spreads into a dense mat that helps fill gaps, soften edges, and keep beds looking finished through heat and dry spells. As the season cools, foliage often deepens to stronger red and burgundy tones for added interest. In late summer, starry blooms add a fresh layer of color and draw pollinators into the garden. Distinctive FeaturesThis mat-forming stonecrop features fleshy, rounded leaves in dark bronze-red tones that can appear greener in summer and intensify to richer reds with strong sun and cooler weather. Creeping stems root as they spread, creating a tight carpet that looks clean and intentional in mass plantings. Clusters of small, star-shaped flowers bloom in late summer in deep rose to ruby-pink shades, standing just above the foliage for a bright seasonal finish. Foliage is often semi-evergreen, extending interest beyond the main growing season in milder climates. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best foliage color and flowering, with light shade tolerated. Soil: Plant in well-drained soil, including sandy or rocky sites, and avoid consistently wet conditions. Water: Water to establish, then keep on the dry side, watering only during extended drought once established. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9 in typical garden conditions. Mature Size: Typically grows 2 to 3 inches tall and spreads 12 to 18 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a broad patch as a low focal point where the bronze-red foliage can read clearly against stone or lighter groundcovers. Groundcover: Mass plant to form a dense mat that fills gaps and helps suppress weeds in sunny beds. Rock Gardens: Tuck into rock and gravel gardens where sharp drainage and reflected heat are common. Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a clean, low border with dependable color. Walls and Slopes: Plant along stone walls or dry slopes where it can spread and lightly cascade over edges. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering or in early spring to refresh growth and keep the mat dense. Fertilizing: Avoid heavy feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact growth and stronger color. Watering: Reduce irrigation once established, as overwatering can lead to weaker growth and crown issues. Mulching: Use a thin gravel top-dress if desired and keep stems from staying wet to reduce rot risk. Propagation: Expand plantings easily by re-rooting small stem pieces or dividing small sections in spring. Why Choose Fuldaglut Stonecrop? Seasonal Foliage Color: Bronze-red leaves provide strong contrast and often deepen to richer tones in cooler weather. Late-Season Bloom: Deep rose to ruby-pink flowers add a fresh finish in late summer. Tough Site Fit: Thrives in poor, rocky, and shallow soils where many plants struggle. Waterwise Performance: Succulent growth handles heat and dry conditions well once established in well-drained soil. Deer and Rabbit Resistance: Foliage is often less appealing to deer and rabbits than many soft-leaved groundcovers. Fuldaglut Stonecrop is an easy way to add durable coverage and long-season color to sunny, fast-draining areas. Pair it with ornamental grasses, silver foliage plants, or golden companions to highlight its warm tones. With sun and drainage, it stays tidy, resilient, and visually strong year after year.
