While it still needs chemicals and water, Lyocell is made in a closed loop system so most of the solvent can be reused. Tencel™ is a brand of Lyocell which uses sustainably sourced wood fibers that are processed in a nontoxic organic solvent. According to tencel.com, Tencel™ Lyocell has a 99% solvent recovery and their fabrics are certified as biodegradable.
