Pomona: A Tapestry of Abundance and Beauty from the Arts and Crafts Movement RE703162

This exquisite tapestry, known as "Pomona," is one of the masterpieces designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a leading figure of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and woven by the renowned William Morris & Co. in the late 19th century. Created around 1885, this piece epitomizes the Arts and Crafts Movement, which sought to revive the traditional techniques and craftsmanship of earlier eras, as a reaction against the industrialization of the Victorian age. Description and Historical Context "Pomona," named after the Roman goddess of fruit and orchards, is a celebration of nature's abundance, rendered with the meticulous detail and romanticism that are the hallmarks of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The tapestry features the figure of Pomona standing gracefully against a rich, dense background of fruit-laden trees and lush foliage. She is depicted in a classical pose, draped in flowing robes of warm, autumnal hues, holding a branch heavy with ripe apples, a symbol of fertility and the harvest. The backdrop is a verdant tapestry of leaves and flowers, intricately woven to create a sense of depth and movement. The use of deep greens, coupled with the vibrant reds and oranges of the fruit, creates a striking contrast that highlights the figure of Pomona, making her the focal point of the composition. Surrounding the central figure is an ornate border, featuring stylized floral motifs typical of William Morris's designs, which frame the scene with a sense of harmony and order. This tapestry reflects the Victorian fascination with medieval art and mythology, blending these influences with the naturalistic detail and idealized beauty characteristic of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The meticulous craftsmanship and rich symbolism of "Pomona" make it not just a decorative piece, but a work of art that embodies the values and aesthetics of a bygone era. Artistic and Technical Details "Pomona" was crafted using the finest materials available at the time, with wool and silk threads woven together to create a rich, textured surface. The wool provides durability and depth of color, while the silk threads add a subtle sheen, particularly in the folds of Pomona's robes and the shimmering leaves of the background. The design by Burne-Jones, executed by the skilled weavers at Morris & Co., showcases the collaborative spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement, where artists, designers, and craftsmen worked together to create objects of beauty that were both functional and meaningful. The tapestry's palette of warm, earthy tones is typical of Morris’s work, reflecting his deep connection to nature and his desire to bring the beauty of the natural world into the home.
