Raydon's Favorite Aromatic Aster

Raydon's Favorite Aromatic Aster (Aster oblongifolius 'Raydon's Favorite')Raydon's Favorite Aromatic Aster is a late-season perennial that finishes the garden with a bright haze of violet-blue flowers when many summer bloomers start to fade. It forms a dense, mounded plant that looks full and intentional in sunny borders, even when used in smaller groups. The foliage is pleasantly fragrant when crushed, adding an extra sensory layer to an already reliable performer. With sun and good drainage, it rewards you with weeks of fall color and strong pollinator activity. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection is known for its billowy, mound-forming habit and heavy fall bloom display of violet-blue, daisy-like flowers with yellow centers. Leaves are aromatic when rubbed, and the plant keeps a neat, shrub-like outline for an herbaceous perennial. Bloom typically peaks in early to mid fall, creating a clean blue finish that pairs beautifully with warm autumn tones. Mature size is commonly about 2 to 3 feet tall and about 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a dense clump that reads well from a distance. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun is best for the heaviest bloom and tightest mound, with light part shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs well in average soils that do not stay wet. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then it prefers dry to medium moisture and tolerates dry periods once rooted in. USDA Zones: 4 to 8. Airflow: Give plants space for airflow to help keep growth looking clean through late season. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use a drift as a fall focal point where the violet-blue bloom haze can brighten the border and carry the season to the finish. Front to Mid Border: Plant at the front or mid line of sunny beds for a dense mound that stays neat and readable. Pollinator Gardens: Add to sunny beds to support bees and butterflies during late-season feeding. Mass Planting: Repeat in groups to create a low, flowering layer that knits plantings together through autumn. Dry Gardens and Slopes: Use in well-drained, sunnier areas where its drought tolerance and mounded habit shine once established. Low Maintenance Care Pinching: Cut back lightly in late spring to encourage a fuller mound and a more controlled shape at bloom time. Watering: Water during prolonged drought in the first season, then only during extended dry spells to support best flowering. Deadheading: Shear lightly after peak bloom if needed to keep the plant tidy and extend the display. Cleanup: Cut back stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Division: Divide every few years if the clump becomes crowded or flowering declines. Why Choose Raydon's Favorite Aromatic Aster?
