The pattern for the main portion of the hat changes its total stitch count as it is worked, which contributes to the overall texture. When measuring your gauge, it is easiest to measure in “Ravenfoot” motifs (four stitches wide on Rows 5 and 11 of chart), rather than individual stitches.
