Rainbow Leucothoe

Rainbow Leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow')Rainbow Leucothoe is a colorful evergreen shrub that brings season-long foliage interest to shaded and lightly shaded landscapes. Its leaves shift through shades of cream, green, pink, bronze, burgundy, and red, making it especially useful where you want a shrub that contributes much more than a single bloom season. This variety fits beautifully into foundation beds, woodland borders, and mixed shrub plantings where stronger foliage color can act as a focal point. In the right setting, it adds texture, evergreen structure, and year-round garden value. Distinctive FeaturesRainbow Leucothoe is prized for its variegated evergreen foliage, red stems, and gracefully arching habit. New growth often emerges mottled with pink, bronze, and cream tones, matures to deep green marked with creamy white variegation, and then develops richer burgundy, bronze, and red shades in cooler weather. Small drooping clusters of white bell-shaped flowers appear in spring along the stems, adding a softer bloom display above the foliage. It typically matures to about 3 to 5 feet tall and about as wide, forming a broad arching evergreen shrub with strong multi-season appeal. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in part shade for the best foliage quality and overall performance, though some sun is tolerated if the soil stays consistently moist. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1} Soil: Grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter for the best health and foliage color. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2} Water: Provide regular moisture during establishment and maintain even moisture, especially in warmer weather. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3} Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4} Habit: Expect a broad, arching, evergreen shrub with multi-stemmed branching and a naturally graceful form. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5} Ideal Uses Foundation Planting: Use it in shaded or lightly shaded foundation beds where its colorful foliage can provide year-round structure and interest. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and help maintain the acidic soil conditions it prefers. Pruning: Prune only as needed to remove damaged branches or lightly shape the plant, since its natural habit is already attractive. Placement: Avoid hot dry sites and alkaline soils, since both can reduce vigor and foliage quality. Maintenance: Heavy pruning is not usually necessary, which helps keep long-term care simple. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7} Why Choose Rainbow Leucothoe?
