Ragin' Red™ Dogwood

Are you looking for a small, colorful tree with a little bit of an attitude? Meet Ragin' Red™ Dogwood (Cornus florida 'JN13'). It has the darkest red flowers available on the market. This is an incredible, ultra-modern cultivar of a native tree. Ragin' Red features dark red color in both flower and foliage! You've seen white and pink Dogwood trees - well, this variety has screamin' purple-red bracts surrounding the tiny true flowers! In spring, you'll be knocked out by how the bare branches suddenly burst into a stunning floral display. The color display remains extremely showy for weeks and calls beneficial pollinators from near and far to enjoy a spring feast. Let the neighborhood get jealous! As the spring bloom fades, brilliant red new growth comes on. The foliage emerges bright red, giving you another welcome blast of color to your landscape. Summertime comes, and the leaves turn dark green with a red overcast. Enjoy these fine-textured trees, and they'll cast dappled shade over your hammock chair and cooler stand. The fireworks really start to heat up in the fall. The flowers give way to abundant clusters of deep red berries that will be displayed in fall persisting well into winter (if the local songbird population doesn't carry them off first!). Then the burnished, deep burgundy fall color comes back to spark up the leaves. Blaze orange, deep red, and mellow purple join in to give you a big finale in early fall! The color show may have ended, but you'll love this variety of Dogwood in the winter, too! The upright, spreading branches capture and sculpt light snowfall to create a picturesque winter form. What an epic way to end the growing season! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8, it looks good anywhere you plant it, but the color will be bolder if the tree receives plenty of sun. Otherwise, the full sun will help your tree generate the best color, the most flowers, and the most bird-friendly fruit. Plant it in slightly acidic, well-drained organic soil. Use pine bark mulch or pine straw spread over the root system to a depth of 3-4 inches. Provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis. This is especially important for young trees in their first season. You'll also want to water your tree well each year as you head into winter. Use the Finger Test to determine if your plant needs water. Stick your finger into the soil near your new tree. If the soil is moist, skip watering that day. If it is getting dry, it's time to water. Prune them to shape when dormant, and remove water growth or suckers after flowering. Decide what you want to keep first, then remove crossed branches and branches heading into the interior of the canopy to open it up for sunlight penetration and air circulation. These gorgeous small trees represent the best of planned breeding programs in the Green Industry. You'll love their colorful show and the easy-care nature!
