Purpleicious Speedwell

Purpleicious Speedwell (Veronica 'Purpleicious')Purpleicious Speedwell is a compact, upright perennial that delivers rich purple flower spikes for strong summer color in a tidy footprint. It brings clean vertical structure to sunny beds, helping mixed plantings look more intentional and less busy. The blooms attract pollinators and hold well on sturdy stems, so you get weeks of color with a polished look. With simple trimming after the first flush, it can keep flowering longer and stay neat through the season. Distinctive FeaturesThis cultivar forms a dense clump of deep green foliage topped with thick, upright spikes of purple flowers that open over an extended warm-season bloom period. The habit is compact and clump-forming, so it stays organized in the border and does not sprawl into pathways. Flowering typically begins in early summer and continues into late summer, with repeat bloom encouraged by deadheading or a light shear. It is also often tolerated by deer and rabbits, making it a dependable choice for high-traffic gardens. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for the best flowering and the strongest, most upright stems. Soil: Well-drained soil with average fertility, and avoid sites that stay wet or waterlogged. Water: Moderate water, keeping moisture consistent during establishment and watering during drought for best bloom. USDA Zones: Zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: About 16 to 20 inches tall in bloom and about 12 to 18 inches wide. Bloom Season: Early summer to late summer, with additional flowering possible after trimming. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a tight group near the front of a sunny bed so the dense purple spikes become a clear seasonal highlight. Border Front: Use along paths and bed edges for tidy, upright color that stays out of walkways. Mass Planting: Repeat in clusters to create a stronger block of color and a more designed look. Pollinator Plantings: Add to sunny beds to support bees and butterflies through the bloom window. Cut Flower Gardens: Plant in small groups for easy harvesting of clean, vertical spikes. Rock and Gravel Gardens: Use in well-drained sites where compact plants stay crisp and resilient. Low Maintenance Care Deadheading: Trim spent spikes after the first flush to encourage more bloom and keep the plant tidy. Watering: Water during dry spells to maintain steady flowering and reduce stress in full sun. Cutback: Cut stems back in late fall or in early spring before new growth begins. Spacing: Give plants room for air flow to help keep growth cleaner in humid weather. Division: Divide clumps every few years if the center thins or if you want to expand the planting. Why Choose Purpleicious Speedwell? Bold Purple Spikes: Dense flower wands deliver strong, saturated color through the heart of summer. Compact Habit: Clump-forming growth stays neat and easy to place in tight borders. Strong Structure: Upright stems add clean vertical rhythm that sharpens mixed plantings. Pollinator Value: Flowers attract beneficial visitors and add life to sunny beds. Deer and Rabbit Tolerance: Often tolerated better than many soft-leaved perennials in mixed borders. Give Purpleicious Speedwell sun, sharp drainage, and a quick trim after blooming, and it will stay neat while delivering weeks of purple color.
