Constructed using a recursive line placement algorithm, where the neighborhood and history of each line determines which points are allowed to sprout in future growth cycles. All shading is due to the density of lines in each region. The same rule set is used throughout the entire image, yet the forms that arise are diverse and distinct. This piece illustrates how simple rules, endlessly iterated, can generate surprising complexity. Nowhere is this principle more prominent than in biology, where morphogens can create every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies from simple rule sets and environmental gradients.
