Most Faithful Ally- Puck Magazine

This striking Puck magazine cover from October 1890 captures a pivotal moment in New York City's ongoing battle against Tammany Hall corruption. The chromolithograph depicts the famous Tammany Tiger, symbol of the Democratic political machine, in desperate supplication. Wounded by documents labeled 'Exposures,' the beast kneels before a well-dressed Republican figure who turns away, hand raised in rejection. The note in his pocket reads 'No Straight Republican Ticket This Year,' signaling the collapse of the political alliance that had sustained Tammany's power. Puck magazine stood at the forefront of American political satire during the Gilded Age, wielding its colorful chromolithograph covers as weapons against corruption. Published from the Puck Building in lower Manhattan, the magazine's sharp wit and sophisticated artistry made it essential reading for reform-minded Americans. This cover appeared as newspaper exposés were eroding public support for the machine politics that had dominated New York for decades. A compelling piece of American political history that bridges journalism, fine art, and social reform. The image offers both visual sophistication and historical depth, making it a standout addition to any collection of Gilded Age illustration or New York City ephemera.
