Scaphognathus was a pterosaur that lived around Germany during the Late Jurassic. It had a wingspan of 0.9 m. This particular fossil, nicknamed "Abfab" (EC K2576), is a pterosaur found in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and is considered Britain's largest flying animal from that period. The fossil provides insights into the animal's taxonomy and estimated size. Pterosaurs, like the one shown, filled various ecological roles during their time, similar to modern birds. The fossil appears to be preserved in a slab, a common method for showcasing delicate skeletal structures of smaller, thin-boned animals like those found in the Kimmeridgian deposits of Germany.
