Pseudobombax ellipticum

Pseudobombax ellipticum, commonly known as the Shaving Brush Tree, is a distinctive caudiciform tree native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. It develops a thick, swollen trunk with smooth greenish-gray bark, giving younger plants a sculptural, bonsai-like appearance. Its branches produce palmately divided leaves composed of several narrow leaflets. Mature specimens may shed their leaves before producing large, dramatic flowers with masses of long stamens resembling shaving brushes. The flowers are typically white or pink, depending on the individual plant. Although it can eventually become a sizable tree outdoors in tropical climates, container-grown plants remain much smaller and respond well to pruning. ☀️ Light Provide bright light with several hours of direct sunlight each day. Introduce young or greenhouse-grown plants to intense afternoon sun gradually to prevent scorching. 💧 Watering Water thoroughly when the soil has dried considerably. During active growth, water regularly but never allow the roots to remain waterlogged. Reduce watering substantially when the plant loses its leaves or becomes dormant. 🪴 Soil Use a very fast-draining soil mixture. A combination of cactus soil, pumice, perlite, and coarse sand works well and helps protect the swollen trunk and roots from rot. 🌡️ Temperature Prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 90°F. Protect it from temperatures below 45°F and bring container-grown plants indoors before freezing weather. 💦 Humidity Average household humidity is suitable. Good airflow is more important than high humidity, especially during dormancy. 🌱 Fertilizing Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing when the plant becomes dormant or loses its leaves. ✂️ Pruning Prune during active growth to control its size, encourage branching, or maintain a compact, bonsai-like form. Allow fresh cuts to dry and avoid excessive watering immediately after heavy pruning. 🏺 Repotting Repot every two to three years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a sturdy container with drainage holes and avoid burying the swollen base too deeply. 🌿 Propagation Pseudobombax ellipticum can be propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. Seed-grown plants generally develop the most attractive swollen trunks, while cuttings may produce less pronounced caudex growth. 🐾 Toxicity Non-toxic.
