Botanical Characteristics: Scientific Name: Protea ‘Pink Ice’ Common Name: Protea Pink Ice Growth Habit: Upright, evergreen shrub Foliage: Leathery, deep green leaves Mature Size: Typically reaches 6-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide USDA Hardiness Zones: 9-11 (may tolerate brief periods of frost in zone 8 with protection) Cultivation and Care: Sunlight: Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours per day) for optimal flowering.   Soil: Requires well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Amend heavy clay soils with organic matter and coarse sand or perlite. Avoid alkaline soils.   Water: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Fertilizer: Proteas are sensitive to phosphorus. Use a low-phosphorus or protea-specific fertilizer in spring and fall. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.   Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and is sensitive to frost. Protect from freezing temperatures in colder regions. Landscape Use: Specimen Plant: Use as a stunning focal point in gardens, attracting attention with its unique blooms. Mixed Borders: Adds vibrant color and texture to mixed shrub borders and Mediterranean-style gardens.   Cut Flowers: The long-lasting blooms are excellent for cut flower arrangements.   Coastal Gardens: Tolerates coastal conditions and salt spray.   Wildlife Attraction: Pollinators: The nectar-rich flowers attract birds, bees, and other pollinators, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem. Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally resistant to pests and diseases. Root rot can occur in poorly draining soil. Watch for signs of fungal diseases in humid conditions and ensure good air circulation. Propagation: Can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late summer or early fall. Rooting can be challenging and requires careful attention to humidity and temperature. Incorporating Protea Pink Ice into Your Landscape: When designing your landscape, consider the following tips: Companion Plants: Pair with other drought-tolerant, acid-loving plants such as grevilleas, leucadendrons, and callistemons. Drainage: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot, especially in areas with heavy rainfall.   Mulching: Use organic mulch, such as pine bark or wood chips, to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity. Keep mulch away from the base of the plant. Pruning: Lightly prune after flowering to remove spent blooms and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy pruning.
