California Privet

California Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium)California Privet is a fast-growing shrub that quickly builds a dense wall of green for privacy, wind protection, and a more finished property line. It takes shearing well, so you can keep it crisp and formal or let it relax into a fuller, natural hedge. In warmer areas it stays semi-evergreen to evergreen, and in colder winters it may drop more foliage but still holds strong structure. If you want a hardworking hedge that fills in quickly and tolerates a wide range of conditions, this privet is built for the job. Distinctive FeaturesThis vigorous privet forms an upright to rounded shrub with glossy, dark green oval leaves and a naturally dense branching habit that responds well to clipping. In late spring to early summer, it produces upright clusters of small white flowers, followed by round berries that ripen to black. Because it grows quickly and can self-seed in some regions, it is best used where you can maintain it with routine pruning and keep the planting tidy. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with best density in full sun. Soil: Adaptable to most well-drained soils, including clay, and it performs best in moderately fertile ground. Water: Medium water, keep evenly moist during establishment and then water as needed during prolonged drought. Zones: USDA Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: About 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, and easily maintained smaller with pruning. Habit: Upright, dense, multi-stemmed shrub that can be kept formal or informal. Bloom: White flower clusters in late spring to early summer. Fruit: Black berries in fall, often persisting into winter. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use California Privet as a focal point when clipped into a clean hedge line that frames an entry, drive, or garden room. Screening: Plant in rows to create a fast, dense privacy screen that can be shaped to the height you need. Windbreaks: Use as a living wind buffer in exposed sites where quick coverage matters. Foundation Planting: Place along larger foundations for evergreen to semi-evergreen structure that stays neat with trimming. Property Borders: Mass along property lines to define space and soften fencing with green coverage. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Shear once to a few times per season to maintain a formal hedge, or prune after flowering for a more natural outline. Watering: Water deeply during the first year, then during extended dry spells to keep foliage full. Feeding: Topdress with compost in spring or fertilize lightly if growth is weak or the soil is lean. Mulching: Mulch to hold moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch a few inches away from stems. Seedling Control: Remove unwanted seedlings and consider trimming after bloom to reduce berry production where self-seeding is a concern. Why Choose California Privet? Fast Privacy: Rapid growth helps you get a tall, dense screen sooner than many shrubs. Hedge Friendly: Handles shearing well and maintains a clean, uniform look with routine trimming. Adaptable Growth: Tolerates a wide range of soils and urban conditions once established. Flexible Form: Works as a formal hedge, an informal screen, or a taller background shrub. Season-Long Structure: Dense branching and glossy foliage keep borders looking finished through the growing season. California Privet is at its best when you treat it like a hedge plant with a plan: give it sun, decent drainage, and a regular pruning rhythm that matches the look you want. Let it establish with consistent moisture, then maintain it with clean trims to keep density and shape. In the right spot, it becomes a reliable green wall that makes the whole landscape feel more private and more intentional.
