Pride and Prejudice Peacock Edition

6b, Jane Austen. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Chiswick Press: Charles Whittingham and co. London. 1894 First Peacock printing. Description Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. It follows the story of Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates issues of love, class, and social expectations in 19th-century England. Central to the novel is her evolving relationship with the proud and wealthy Mr. Darcy, whose initial arrogance gradually gives way to humility and affection. Through witty dialogue and keen social commentary, Austen critiques the limited roles available to women and explores the complexities of marriage and morality. The 1894 “Peacock Edition” of Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, is one of the most famous and visually striking bindings in book history. Published by George Allen & Sons, it was designed by the renowned illustrator Hugh Thomson. The binding is called the “Peacock Edition” because of its elaborate cover design, featuring a large peacock with its tail feathers spread across the front in gold and dark blue. The design reflects the elegance and wit of the novel, while also capturing the ornate, decorative style popular in late Victorian bookmaking. Thomson also illustrated the interior with charming, detailed drawings that complement the story. Notes Beautiful Peacock edition. Elaborate gilt designs to upper cover and spine. Bright.
