Prevent Forest Fires, U.S. Forest Service

This striking wartime public service poster from the U.S. Forest Service captures a pivotal moment in American conservation history. Produced in the early 1940s, just months before Smokey Bear would become the face of fire prevention, this piece represents the original approach to the campaign: direct, practical messaging aimed at everyday citizens doing their part on the home front. The bold flame-effect lettering on 'PREVENT FOREST FIRES!' commands attention against the warm yellow ground, while the detailed illustration of a hand reaching for a vintage car ashtray speaks to a specific era of American motoring. The composition bridges wartime urgency with mid-century graphic design sensibility, transforming a simple safety message into compelling visual communication. A fascinating artifact of the WWII home front, this poster reminds us that protecting America's forests was considered as vital to the war effort as rationing gasoline or collecting scrap metal. A standout piece for collectors of Americana, conservation history, or wartime ephemera. Size: 20.25" x 14" Artist: George Giusti Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear, fading and toning.
