19th-Century Continental School “The Penitent Magdalene” Oil on canvas, after Carlo Dolci (1616–1687)

19th-Century Continental School “The Penitent Magdalene” Oil on canvas, after Carlo Dolci (1616–1687) Presented in its original gilt surround   This beautiful 19th-century devotional painting captures Mary Magdalene in a moment of quiet penitence, her hands delicately clasped in prayer, her gaze lifted toward the divine. The artist draws directly from the celebrated Baroque master Carlo Dolci, whose tender and contemplative religious portraits were deeply admired throughout Europe. Works after Dolci were especially prized in the 19th century for their serenity, emotional depth, and luminous treatment of the human form—qualities that are all strongly present here.   Rendered with exceptional softness in the flesh tones and a skillful control of light and shadow, the piece displays the hallmarks of an accomplished academic painter. The deep green drapery, the gentle modeling of the face, and the refined treatment of the hands give the composition a moving spiritual presence.   The canvas is housed in its original giltwood frame, decorated with raised foliate ornament and retaining its historical charm. Expected age wear is present, including stable craquelure to the painting and separation to areas of the frame, yet the overall effect remains strikingly beautiful and atmospheric—an ideal statement piece for collectors of devotional art, Old Master studies, or richly evocative 19th-century interiors.   Condition: Very good for age; stable craquelure, minor surface wear, and cracks to the frame consistent with its 19th-century origin. Displays wonderfully.
