Prairie Winds® 'October Sky' Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum) | Proven Winners® New Variety 2026

Looking for a native grass that brings both grace and grit to your garden? Meet October Sky—a mid-sized marvel that puts on a spectacular autumn show with rosy purple seedheads that shimmer against blue-green foliage. Upright, elegant, and full of quiet drama, this is a grass that knows how to make an entrance—and a lasting impression. True to its name, October Sky evokes that crisp, golden-hour feeling of fall. As breezes roll in, the airy seedheads sway with a peaceful rustle that gives switch grass its charming name. And while the movement is soft, the plant itself is anything but fragile. With strong stems and a resilient habit, October Sky stands tall through winter (unless buried under heavy snow), providing vital shelter for birds when they need it most. Design-wise, this grass is the ultimate team player. Use it as a graceful specimen, plant in sweeping masses for impact, or let it soften the edges of ponds, streams, and containers alike. No matter how you style it, October Sky delivers beauty, movement, and wildlife support all in one tidy, upright package. Resilient. Radiant.
