Prairie Dropseed Grass

Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) is a North American native ornamental grass celebrated for its fine texture, graceful fountain-like shape, and low-maintenance appeal. This warm-season perennial grass forms tidy mounds of arching, emerald-green blades that turn golden-orange in fall, often with a hint of rose or russet. Late summer brings delicate, airy flower panicles that float above the foliage, releasing a light, coriander-like fragrance that adds an extra layer of charm to your garden. Its refined texture and year-round interest make it a standout among native grasses. Highly adaptable and drought-tolerant once established, Prairie Dropseed is an excellent choice for xeriscapes, meadows, native plant gardens, and urban landscapes. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, performing beautifully in tough conditions where other plants may struggle. Because of its compact size and elegant habit, it’s equally at home as a mass planting, edging plant, or specimen in formal or informal designs. Its deep, fibrous roots also make it an ideal plant for erosion control and habitat restoration projects. Beyond its ornamental value, Sporobolus heterolepis plays an essential role in supporting native ecosystems. It provides food and shelter for beneficial insects, birds, and pollinators, while its resilience to deer browsing makes it a reliable option for wildlife-friendly yet deer-resistant landscapes. Native to the prairies of North America, Prairie Dropseed combines ecological value with garden-worthy beauty, offering a sustainable solution for landscapes that are both functional and visually stunning.
