Behind the Inspiration This “little poor man,” as Francis called himself, joyfully gave up all he had to follow Christ, embracing a life of radical poverty. Cypress calls to mind the area around Assisi where he roamed, begging for stones to rebuild God’s church and preaching the peace of the Gospel, while earth recalls his humility and love of creation. St. Francis’s feast day is October 4.
