Politicks and War — John Adams Journal

A literary journal by Quoteiac. “I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Mathematicks and Philosophy.” — John Adams, Letter to Abigail Adams, 1780 Verified — John Adams, Letter to Abigail Adams, 1780 (Adams Family Papers) Adams wrote this letter from Paris in 1780, mid-war and far from home. He was a lawyer by training, a philosopher by instinct, and at that moment he was doing neither — attending dinners, negotiating alliances, writing dispatches he knew would take weeks to arrive. The intellectual life he had always wanted was exactly the life he had set aside. He knew what he was giving up. The letter to Abigail wasn’t complaint — it was clarity. He could name the shape of the sacrifice because he had thought it through: one generation bears the cost of the conditions that make the next generation’s choices possible. That is not patriotism. That is a theory of how civilization actually moves. “Politicks” and “Mathematicks” are not errors. In 1780, they were the correct spellings — the -ick and -ck endings were standard in educated English of the period. Noah Webster’s reforms, which began in earnest after the Revolution, eventually stripped them to the -ic forms we recognize today. We’ve kept Adams’s original spelling intact. A letter about what one generation sacrifices so the next can think freely shouldn’t arrive with its language tidied up. The Design Most notebooks sit blank because it’s hard to know what to say into an empty page. This one doesn’t have that problem. Adams’s line is already there — not as a prompt to feel good, but as a condition. He wrote it knowing exactly what it was costing him. Writing in its margin means deciding what you’re doing with what he paid for.
