It brings bold color and a clean vertical accent from midsummer into fall, right when many borders need a second wind. The grass-like foliage stays neat, so the plant looks finished even between bloom flushes. If you want hummingbird-friendly color in a small footprint, this is an easy, high-impact choice. Distinctive FeaturesUpright spikes of tubular flowers open in warm coral-red to red-orange tones above a tidy clump of narrow, green, strap-like leaves. Bloom typically starts in midsummer and continues into early fall, with flower spikes appearing in succession for an extended show. The habit is compact and clump-forming, designed for smaller gardens and containers while still delivering the classic red hot poker look. Stems are generally sturdy in full sun, giving you a crisp vertical line without constant support. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun for best flowering and strongest stems. Soil: Well-drained soil, and avoid sites that stay wet, especially in winter. Water: Moderate to establish, then low to moderate once established, and let the soil dry slightly between waterings. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 6 to 9. Mature Size: About 14 inches tall and 14 inches wide, with flower spikes commonly reaching about 20 inches tall. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a sunny bed or container where the coral-red spikes can rise above companions and carry late-season color. Containers: Plant in large pots for a clean, upright accent that stays neat through summer and fall. Front Border: Place near the front of sunny borders for bold vertical color without blocking neighboring plants. Pollinator Beds: Include in sunny habitat plantings to attract hummingbirds and other pollinators during peak bloom. Mass Planting: Repeat in groups to create a consistent ribbon of warm color and strong summer texture. Low Maintenance Care Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to keep the plant tidy and encourage additional blooming. Watering: Water during extended drought, especially in containers, to maintain steady flowering. Drainage: Prioritize sharp drainage to reduce winter stress and improve long-term performance. Cleanup: Cut back old foliage and spent stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Division: Divide clumps every few years in spring if vigor declines or to expand plantings.
