Hardy Plumbago

Hardy Plumbago (Ceratostigma plumbaginoides)Hardy Plumbago, also known as leadwort, is a low, spreading perennial that fills in sunny to lightly shaded areas with a clean carpet of foliage and a late-season pop of true blue. It is an easy way to cover bare ground around larger shrubs and perennials, especially where you want color after midsummer. In fall, the green leaves shift to bronzy red tones, so the plant keeps working even after the flowers finish. Once established, it handles heat well and asks for very little beyond decent drainage. Distinctive FeaturesThis groundcover forms a low mound that slowly spreads by rhizomes, producing clusters of small, star-shaped, bright blue flowers from late summer into early fall. The foliage emerges late in spring and then builds into a dense mat of green leaves that often turns red to bronze in fall for strong seasonal finish. It can be energetic in good conditions, which makes it excellent for covering space, but easy to guide with edging where needed. The overall effect is a long-season ground layer with a late bloom moment that stands out in the landscape. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with some afternoon shade helpful in hotter climates. Soil: Average, well-drained soil, and avoid wet, poorly drained sites. Water: Medium, water to establish, then moderate drought tolerance once established. USDA Zones: 5 to 9. Mature Size: About 6 to 12 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, spreading over time. Notable Traits: Late-summer blue flowers, red to bronze fall color, and groundcover spread by rhizomes. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Mass it along a front edge so the blue late-season flowers create a focal point when many groundcovers are just green. Groundcover: Use to knit together borders, cover bare soil, and reduce weeding in sunny to lightly shaded beds. Underplanting: Plant beneath open-canopy shrubs and small trees where it can fill in without competing for height. Rock Gardens: Tuck into well-drained, sunny pockets where it can cascade slightly and add fall color. Bulb Companions: Use around spring bulbs because it emerges later, helping hide fading bulb foliage. Low Maintenance Care Edging: Trim or edge in spring or early summer to keep spread within bounds. Watering: Water regularly the first season, then water during extended drought for best bloom and coverage. Mulching: Mulch lightly to conserve moisture, but keep crowns from staying wet in winter. Cutback: Cut back dead stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Winter Protection: In colder zone 5 sites, a light winter mulch can help protect crowns. Why Choose Hardy Plumbago? Late-Season Blue: Brings true blue flowers in late summer to early fall when many beds need a refresh. Groundcover Value: Spreads to cover soil and knit plantings together with a clean, low profile. Fall Color: Foliage often turns red to bronze in fall for an extra season of interest. Heat Tolerance: Handles summer sun well once established, especially with good drainage. Easy Companion Plant: Layers well under shrubs and alongside perennials without blocking sightlines. If you want a groundcover that does more than just fill space, Hardy Plumbago is a smart choice for long-season value. Give it sun to part shade, decent drainage, and a solid first year of watering, and it will spread into a dependable carpet. The late blue flowers and fall color make it feel like an intentional design element, not just a filler plant.
