Pleiospilos simulans

Succulent Pleiospilos simulans that is commonly known as the liver plant, is a native of South Africa. As a member of the Aizoaceae family, the clump-forming succulent is usually stemless or has a tiny stem with one-two pair of leaves. The lower pair of leaves are the old ones, and the upper pair is the new pair of leaves. These leaves are triangular-shaped and appear like the open jaws of a serpent. The leaves are also pretty broad and thick. The overall height of the plant is between 5 and 8 cm. It is a summer-dormant plant and is slightly frost-hardy. Between late summer to early fall, the succulent bears yellow to orange-colored flowers. These blooms have a characteristic white center. It is a slow-growing plant. Growth Rate The Pleiospilos simulans are a slow-growing plant. Flowering Pleiospilos simulans sprouts yellow to orange-colored flowers between late summer to early fall. Watering The plant requires very little watering as it is very adaptable. However, from late summer to early fall, the watering should be about once a week but stopped during winter. If the plant receives more than the required water during winter, the new pair of leaves will not grow. Soil The soil for the succulent should be open compost with good draining facilities. Ensure that the container is deep. Hardiness This is a slightly frost-hardy plant with a hardiness zone of 9b to 11. Light The plant needs full sun to light shade for optimal growth. Propagation Seed propagation is the ideal way. In the North American climate, the Pleiospilos simulans suit well as they can grow on their own for a year without water.
