Popstar Blue Balloon Flower

Pop Star Blue Balloon Flower is a compact perennial that brings an unusual combination of playful buds and bold summer flowers to the garden. Its distinctive buds swell into rounded, balloon-like shapes before opening to reveal broad, star-shaped flowers in a rich blue to violet-blue color. The flowers can reach about 2 inches across and stand out against the plant’s neat green foliage. Blooming through summer, this variety provides a long-lasting display without taking up much space. Growing just 6–8 inches tall and about 10–12 inches wide, Pop Star™ Blue is particularly useful where a shorter perennial is needed. Its naturally compact, mounding habit keeps the plant tidy and eliminates the need for staking, while its smaller size makes it easy to appreciate the unusual balloon-shaped buds and starry flowers up close. The flowers also attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding wildlife value to even smaller planting areas. This balloon flower performs best in full sun to partial sun and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it has good drought tolerance, making it a useful choice for areas where plants may occasionally experience dry conditions. Deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone, giving it an advantage in gardens where browsing can be a problem. In fall, the foliage can develop attractive golden tones before the plant goes dormant for winter. Care Instructions: Planting: Plant in spring or fall, setting the crown at approximately the same depth as it was growing in its container. Handle the roots carefully when planting, as established balloon flowers develop a substantial root system and do not appreciate frequent disturbance. Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It can tolerate clay, loam, or sandy soil as long as drainage is adequate. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings and provide supplemental water during prolonged periods of hot or dry weather. Avoid consistently soggy soil. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage unnecessary foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers throughout summer to encourage continued blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. Allow the foliage to die back naturally in fall, then cut the plant to the ground after it has gone dormant. Spacing: Space plants about 10–12 inches apart to allow room for their mature spread while creating a full planting. Maintenance: Low maintenance once established. Balloon flowers emerge relatively late in spring, so mark their location to avoid disturbing the dormant crown. Their sturdy, compact growth generally does not require staking. Avoid moving established plants unless necessary. Pop Star Blue is an especially versatile choice for edging, the front of perennial borders, containers, and other small planting spaces. Its compact size makes it easy to combine with taller perennials without being hidden, while the unusual buds and vivid blue flowers give it plenty of visual interest despite its small stature. It also makes a useful cut flower for bringing its distinctive blooms indoors. Landscape Solutions: Provides a compact flowering option for the front of perennial borders. Works well along walkways and garden edges where its unusual balloon-shaped buds can be appreciated up close. Provides a drought-tolerant flowering option for areas that occasionally become dry. Offers a deer- and rabbit-resistant perennial where browsing is a concern. Attracts pollinators with its summer flowers.
