This striking plate from La Médecine Pittoresque exemplifies the extraordinary achievement of French medical publishing during the mid-nineteenth century. On the left, a meticulously rendered dissection reveals the internal mammary and epigastric arteries, their delicate branches traced in vivid carmine against the warm tones of muscle and the pale architecture of the ribcage. The anatomist's scalpel has been replaced by the engraver's burin, transforming clinical observation into visual poetry. Balancing this study in human anatomy, the right side presents the Garou plant (Daphne gnidium), its clusters of white flowers rising above narrow, silvery-green leaves. Small botanical details below parse the flower's structure with scientific precision. This pairing of human and plant anatomy was a distinctive feature of the collection, reflecting an era when medicine and natural philosophy remained intimately connected. Published under the direction of Antoine Laurent Bayle, this atlas represented the pinnacle of Parisian scientific illustration. The original hand-coloring retains remarkable freshness, making this an exceptional example for collectors of medical antiques or natural history prints. Size: 10.5" x 7.25" Condition: Very Good
