Halite on trona from Owens Lake, California, represents a unique geological occurrence where two minerals, halite (common salt) and trona (a sodium carbonate mineral), coexist in a visually striking formation. Owens Lake, located in the Eastern Sierra Nevada region, was historically a significant source of soda ash, extracted from trona deposits for industrial purposes. The halite-trona association formed in this region due to the evaporative processes in the lake's shallow, arid environment. Chemically, halite is composed of sodium chloride (NaCl), while trona is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate carbonate mineral (Na3(CO3)(HCO3)·2H2O). The combination of these minerals results in formations with contrasting textures and colors, with halite typically appearing as transparent cubic crystals and trona forming fibrous or granular masses. Halite on trona specimens from Owens Lake showcase the interplay between these minerals, offering insights into the geologic processes that shaped the landscape of this region.
