Designed by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse, Pinehurst No. 4 offers a unique golfing experience that combines traditional elements with modern design concepts. The course, which opened in 1919, has undergone several renovations over the years, with the most recent one being completed in 2018. Hanse's redesign of Pinehurst No. 4 aimed to enhance the course's natural beauty while also making it more challenging and enjoyable for players of all skill levels. One of the most striking features of Pinehurst No. 4 is its natural setting. The course is located in the heart of the Sandhills region of North Carolina, which is known for its rolling hills, towering pines, and sandy soil. Hanse's redesign took advantage of these natural elements to create a course that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The course features wide fairways that are lined with native grasses and vegetation, giving it a natural look and feel. The greens are also designed to blend in with the landscape, with subtle undulations and slopes that make them challenging to read and putt. Despite its natural appearance, Pinehurst No. 4 is a challenging golf course. It has a slope rating of 140 and a course rating of 76.2, making it one of the toughest courses in the area. The redesign added several new bunkers, water hazards, and other obstacles that require precise shot-making and strategic thinking. One of the most notable changes in the redesign was the removal of several trees, which opened up the course and created more strategic options for players. The new bunkers and waste areas also provide more risk-reward opportunities for players, allowing them to take on more difficult shots for the chance at a better score. Pinehurst No. 4 is a walking-only course, which adds to the traditional feel of the golfing experience. Caddies are available for those who want them, and the course offers a range of amenities, including a pro shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant. Overall, Pinehurst No. 4 is a beautifully designed golf course that offers a unique and challenging golfing experience.
