Story Note From the Photographer This was the first place I hiked while in Japan. What started as a simple hike turned into climbing up the side of a mountain, following a rope we found leading up another trail. That path eventually led us here. It’s often considered a sign of respect to leave something for the gods, so we left a small bag of diced pineapple.
