Pine Solvent

Pine Solvent: A Smarter Choice for Finishing and Cleaning Pine Solvent is distilled from the natural terpenes found in pine trees, offering the strength of a professional-grade solvent with the peace of mind that comes from using a renewable, plant-based source. While it shares its roots with pine oil, this is a refined solvent-grade distillate — designed for thinning oils, dissolving buildup, and cleaning tools — not raw essential oil. Ready to make the switch? Order Pine Solvent from RMP Finishes today and experience a natural alternative to harsh mineral spirits. Unlike petroleum-based thinners, this solvent won’t leave behind chemical residues or overwhelming fumes. It evaporates cleanly, carries a subtle pine aroma, and gives oil finishes the ability to penetrate deeper into wood grain. That means better results for furniture makers, restorers, and DIY projects alike. It’s also versatile: use it as a natural degreaser, as a prep step before finishing, or as an all-purpose shop solvent. And because it’s biodegradable, it’s safer for the environment when handled responsibly. Why customers choose it: More economical than citrus-based solvents. Safer handling compared to mineral spirits. Works equally well for finishing and cleaning. Backed by RMP’s commitment to natural, effective products. Looking for the perfect pairing? Use Pine Solvent alongside Pure Tung Oil from RMP Finishes for professional-quality finishes that bring out the natural beauty of wood. How to Use Pine Solvent For Thinning Oils: Mix solvent with Pure Tung Oil, Dark Tung Oil, or other natural oils at your preferred ratio. Stir thoroughly to ensure an even blend. Apply to wood with a brush or cloth — the solvent helps oils penetrate deeper without raising the grain. Allow the mixture to cure fully for a food-contact-safe finish. For Cleaning Brushes & Tools: Pour a small amount into a container and dip or swirl natural bristle paint brushes and tools to loosen oil residue. Wipe excess solvent on a clean rag. Follow with soap and water for final cleanup. Let brushes dry completely before storage. For Degreasing & Surface Prep: Apply full strength to rags for heavy wax or grease removal. For lighter cleaning, dilute with soap and water. Wipe down the surface, allowing it to dry completely before applying a finish. For Household & Shop Cleaning: Mix a small amount with warm, soapy water to create a natural cleaning solution for tools, workbenches, or shop surfaces. FAQ Frequently Asked Questions about Pine Solvent Is Pine Solvent the same as pine oil? No. While it’s sourced from pine oil terpenes, it’s a refined solvent-grade distillate — not raw essential oil. That makes it suitable for thinning oils and cleaning, not for aromatherapy or household fragrance. Can Pine Solvent be mixed with other solvents? Yes. Pine Solvent can be blended with Citrus Solvent™ or Mineral Spirits and will seamlessly integrate into products containing them. Mixing will not affect results or performance. Is this safe to use on indoor projects? Yes. Many customers prefer it indoors because the pine aroma is more pleasant than the sharp odor of petroleum thinners. Always ensure proper ventilation while working. Can I use it straight, or does it need to be diluted? Both. Use it full strength for thinning oils or removing waxes. For lighter cleaning jobs, dilute with soap and water — a little goes a long way. Does it change the color of wood? No. It’s clear to pale yellow and won’t alter the natural tone of your finish. What types of projects benefit most from Pine Solvent? It shines in woodworking and finishing projects (like tung oil applications), brush and tool cleanup, furniture restoration, and prepping wood or metal surfaces before finishing. How does it compare to Citrus Solvent™? Both are natural, safe, and effective. The difference is in the source (pine vs. citrus), the aroma (pine vs. citrus), and value (this option is more economical). Is it safe for food-contact projects? Yes. Once finishes are fully cured, they are considered safe for countertops, cutting boards, and utensils. Does it require special disposal? Like all solvents, it shouldn’t be poured into drains. Small amounts can evaporate outdoors; larger quantities should be disposed of according to local waste guidelines. How should I store it? Keep containers sealed in a cool, ventilated area, away from open flames or sparks. Store locked up when not in use. Will it damage brushes or tools? No. It helps extend the life of brushes and tools by dissolving residues and conditioning bristles when followed by proper cleanup.
