Phytoseiulus persimilis | Two-Spotted Spider Mite Specialist

Two-Spotted Spider Mite Specialist When two-spotted spider mites take hold in webbing-heavy hot spots, you need a predator that can knock the population down fast in that exact area. Phytoseiulus persimilis was the very first predatory mite used in commercial pest management, and it's still one of the most ferocious. It's a specialist built to hunt exclusively within spider mite webbing. Ideal for targeted applications on the worst-hit sections of a crop, persimilis is a fast, aggressive knockdown tool rather than a broad preventive layer. What Are Predatory Mites? Phytoseiulus persimilis is a Type I predator — meaning it preys exclusively on webbing spider mites rather than feeding on a range of alternative prey or pollen. That specialization comes with a tradeoff: unlike generalists such as andersoni or californicus, persimilis needs consistently high humidity (around 70% relative humidity within the plant canopy) for its eggs to hatch and for a reproducing population to establish. That makes it a poor fit for dry environments, but extremely effective where humidity is already high and infestations are concentrated. What do Persimilis Target? Targets two-spotted spider mites, carmine red mites, Pacific mites, and many other pest mite species. How It Works Persimilis predators are recognizable by their long front legs and pear-shaped bodies ranging from bright orange to red, measuring about 1mm — their small size lets them move freely through spider mite webbing to reach prey other predators can't. An adult can consume up to 35 food units a day while laying 4–7 eggs of its own. Females lay translucent eggs beneath leaves near pest concentrations; under favorable conditions the full egg-to-adult life cycle takes about a week, with eggs typically hatching within 7–14 days. Larvae progress through two nymphal stages, moving on to larger spider mites before reaching adulthood, and adults consume significant numbers of spider mites across all life stages. When to Use Persimilis? Persimilis shines as a targeted, active-infestation tool — it's best deployed directly on "hot spot" areas already showing heavy webbing and spider mite activity, where its speed and appetite deliver a fast localized knockdown. Because it depends on sustained high humidity to reproduce, it works best in greenhouses or humid growing environments rather than as a dry-climate preventive release. Choosing Your Release Method Bottled Predators — Active Infestations Delivers a concentrated dose of feeding-ready adults Suited to knocking down populations that have already taken hold Works indoors or out — houseplants, gardens, greenhouses, and larger growing operations Re-introduce weekly or every other week as needed Slow-Release Sachets — Prevention & Maintenance Releases a mix of life stages gradually over 2–4 weeks Low-effort way to maintain standing protection between active treatments Hang and let it work, no repeated handling for weeks at a time Application Rates These are general starting points — actual application should be adjusted based on pest species, plant type, and infestation severity. Monitor pest and predator populations regularly to gauge how well the program is working. Bottled Mite Release Application Rate Frequency  Light Infestation 0.5-2 mites per sq. ft. Weekly or bi-weekly Heavy Infestation 2-4 mites per sq. ft. Weekly or bi-weekly   Sachet Release Application Rate Frequency  Plants Touching 1 sachet per 3-6 sq. ft. Every 2-4 weeks Plants Not Touching 1 sachet per plant Every 2-4 weeks Temperature & Humidity Range Effective range: 68°F – 90°F Humidity: 60-95% Application Instructions Bottled Release: Release early morning, evening, or when grow lights are off Clear away any webbing on infested foliage first Mist leaves lightly before releasing predators Sprinkle bottle contents directly onto plants, or use hanging boxes to keep predators concentrated in target zones. Leave the open container in place for 72 hours so any remaining predators can disperse Repeat every one to two weeks until the infestation is under control Sachet Release: Choose plants where you want standing protection Hang the sachet out of direct sunlight Replace every 2–4 weeks; don't let sachets dry out completely, since prolonged dampness can also encourage fungal growth Pairing for Full-Spectrum Mite Control For heavier or more widespread spider mite pressure, pair persimilis with Stethorus punctillum, a predatory beetle with a large appetite that also feeds on aphids, or Feltiella acarisuga, a flying predator of spider mites that can reach areas persimilis can't. Safe, Sustainable Pest Management 100% natural — no chemical residue Safe around people and pets Safe for use on edible crops Fits seamlessly into existing IPM programs Requires no protective equipment Storage For best results, release immediately upon arrival. If short-term storage is unavoidable, keep at 45–55°F for no more than 24 hours, out of direct sunlight. Never freeze.
