Philodendron Whipple Way One of the most dramatically variegated philodendrons in cultivation, originating as a chimeric sport discovered in Los Angeles and named after the street where the original mother plant was found. New leaves emerge in a near-total white to pale mint-white coloration with pink and soft green speckles before maturing through soft pink to pale lime green — carrying multiple distinct color stages simultaneously across different leaves on the same plant. The elongated, lanceolate, leathery leaves are carried in an upright climbing habit. A slow grower whose extreme variegation makes it both highly coveted and demanding to keep. Light: Bright but filtered indirect light — bright enough to maintain and intensify the white variegation, filtered enough to avoid scorching the chlorophyll-poor near-albino sectors. Insufficient light causes reversion. Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark and perlite; excellent drainage essential. Never waterlogged — overwatering is more dangerous here than with green philodendrons given the reduced metabolism. Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-82°F; humidity of 60-70% supports the cleanest leaf emergence and healthiest growth. Watering: Allow the top inch of medium to approach dryness between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog. Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; consistent feeding supports growth across the extensive reduced-chlorophyll sectors. Reduce in winter.
