Philodendron Verrucosum Acoiris

Philodendron verrucosum was first described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in the 19th century and is native to the humid rainforests of Central and South America, including Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It grows as a hemiepiphytic climber, often starting terrestrially before ascending trees in shaded understories. The name verrucosum refers to the rough, bristly hairs found along its petioles. The cultivar ‘Acoiris’ is a collector-recognized form distinguished by its iridescent foliage. Leaves shift in tone depending on light, displaying deep green with shimmering hues of bronze, red, and gold. Combined with the velvety texture and bold venation typical of verrucosum, this iridescence makes ‘Acoiris’ one of the most visually striking and sought-after forms of the species. Care Guide Light: Bright, indirect light to enhance iridescence and venation. Avoid direct sun which can scorch foliage. Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Keep evenly moist but not soggy. Humidity: Requires very high humidity (70–90%) to thrive. Benefits from humidifiers, greenhouse setups, or terrariums. Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F. Protect from drafts and cold below 60°F. Soil: Loose, well-draining mix with potting soil, perlite/pumice, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss. Fertilizer: Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce in winter. Growth Habit: Climbing philodendron with velvety, iridescent leaves and bold venation. Requires support to reach full size. Common Issues: Yellow leaves: overwatering or nutrient imbalance. Brown edges: low humidity or underwatering. Pests: spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Toxicity: Not safe for pets or humans if ingested. Key Notes: Philodendron verrucosum 'Acoiris' thrives under carefully controlled tropical conditions. With bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and high humidity, it develops into a spectacular climbing specimen. Its shimmering, multicolored foliage sets it apart from standard verrucosum forms, making it a centerpiece for advanced collectors who value both historical species significance and unique cultivar traits.
